Q: We're on a well with hard water. Will it mark the quartz? A: It leaves deposits but it does not damage the surface. North Pickering wells run hard, and around a tap or a drainboard you get a white ring that looks like etching and is actually just mineral sitting on top — quartz is non-porous, so nothing soaks in and a mild descaler takes it off. The two things to keep off it are hydrofluoric acid and a high-alkaline drain cleaner left standing.
