Can you replace a countertop without ripping out our existing cabinets?
In most cases yes. We lift the old top off, check the cabinet run for level, and set the quartz on the existing boxes. Older Colborne kitchens sometimes have a countertop that was built in with the cabinets or tiled onto a mortar bed, which takes more care coming off — the consultant will spot that during the visit and factor it in. Removal and disposal of the old counter is something we handle, so you're not left with it in the driveway.
Our Colborne house is a red brick Victorian with a kitchen added on later. Anything to watch for?
A few things, all normal for that build. The added-on section usually sits at a slightly different floor level than the original house, so cabinet tops may not run level end to end. The old brick or plaster walls will not be square. Both are handled at the template stage — we measure the room as built and cut to that. If you want a slab backsplash rather than tile, say so during the visit, because it changes how we scribe the back edge.
How do we choose a colour that won't fight with an older house's woodwork?
Look at the samples in the actual room, in daylight and under your own lights. That's the whole reason the consultant drives out with physical pieces rather than a printed chart. In older Colborne houses with stained trim and dark floors, a warm off-white or a soft grey with subtle movement usually reads better than a stark bright white, which can make original woodwork look tired.
