What Do Quartz Countertops Cost? A Real Kitchen, Fully Priced
Most countertop pricing online is a range with no kitchen attached. This is the opposite: one real layout, measured, drawn and priced line by line in our estimator, so you can see where the money goes.
The space
A 2000s suburban kitchen east of Toronto: an L-shaped run of 132″ along the sink wall and 96″ along the range wall, plus a 78″ × 40″ island. The original tops were post-formed beige laminate with a rolled front edge and a seam at the corner that had lifted. The cabinets were fine, so the owners kept them and replaced only the counters.

The stone
HanStone Calacatta Mont, 3cm. Calacatta Mont gave the owners the white-marble kitchen they wanted for the price of a mid-range quartz, and it will look the same in ten years: non-porous, no sealing, and the veining is light enough that the corner seam is nearly invisible. In a busier stone the same seam would have cut through a vein. On a 57 sq ft kitchen the whole job came out of a single 130″ × 65″ jumbo slab, seamed once at the corner, which is what kept the stone line where it is.

That works out to $120 per square foot of finished countertop, everything included — quoted per square foot of counter, not per square foot of slab. Cutting waste is inside the stone line, not hidden in the rate.
Where the money goes
- Stone, about 60%. The slab is the biggest single line but not the majority. Moving from Calacatta Mont to an entry-level HanStone colour would have saved roughly a third of the stone line and about a fifth of the total — real, but smaller than most people guess.
- Fabrication and installation, about a third. Templating, cutting, edge polishing, the sink cutout and setting the tops is skilled work and it costs the same in an entry-level slab as a premium one. This is the part that separates a countertop from a piece of stone.
- Edges and cutouts. An eased edge is the least expensive profile. A mitred waterfall end or a full-height backsplash adds stone and labour; a second sink or a cooktop cutout adds a line each.
- Tear-out and delivery. Removing and disposing of the old laminate, driving the slabs out and setting up on site are fixed costs that do not shrink much on a small kitchen.
Common questions
Is this what my kitchen will cost?
Only if it is the same size, in the same stone, with the same edge and sink. This kitchen is a common suburban layout — 57 sq ft — and Calacatta Mont sits in HanStone’s upper range. A smaller kitchen in an entry-level colour can come in well under this; a big island in a premium slab can go well over. We quote every kitchen from its own measurements, free.
Why is the stone only about 60% of the price?
Because a countertop is a fabricated product, not just a slab. Templating, cutting, polishing, the sink cutout, delivery and installation are real labour, and they cost roughly the same whether the slab is entry-level or premium. That is also why choosing a cheaper colour saves less than people expect.
What is the 15% cutting waste?
Slabs come in fixed sizes (this one is 130″ × 65″). Your pieces have to be cut from those slabs, and the offcuts cannot be used elsewhere. Typical waste is 10–20% depending on the layout; our estimator lays your pieces out on real slab sizes so you pay for the slabs you actually use.
Can I keep my old backsplash?
Usually, yes. This quote has no backsplash. If you add a 4″ quartz upstand or a full-height slab backsplash, that is priced as extra stone and fabrication.
How long did it take?
Template on day one, installation within 1–5 days of templating. The old laminate tops were removed the morning of the install and the plumber reconnected the sink that afternoon.
