What Do Quartz Countertops Cost? A Real Kitchen, Fully Priced

Most countertop pricing online is a range with no kitchen attached. This is the opposite: one ordinary kitchen, measured, drawn and priced line by line in our estimator, so you can see where the money goes. Laminate out, quartz in.

The kitchen

A 2000s suburban kitchen east of Toronto: an L-shaped run of 132″ along the sink wall and 96″ along the range wall, plus a 78″ × 40″ island. The original tops were post-formed beige laminate with a rolled front edge and a seam at the corner that had lifted. The cabinets were fine, so the owners kept them and replaced only the counters.

The stone

The owners wanted a marble look without marble maintenance and had white shaker cabinets with stainless appliances. We brought samples to the house and they chose HanStone Calacatta Mont: a bright white base with soft grey veining that has enough movement to read as stone from across the room, but not so much that a seam or a sink cutout interrupts a big vein. In 3cm it takes an eased edge cleanly and needs no plywood build-up under the island overhang.

The quote, line by line

That works out to $120 per square foot of finished countertop, everything included. Quoted per square foot of counter, not per square foot of slab — the 15% cutting waste is inside the stone line, not hidden in the rate.

Where the money goes

• Stone, 61%. The slab is the biggest single line but not the majority. Moving from Calacatta Mont to an entry-level HanStone colour would have saved roughly a third of the stone line and about a fifth of the total — real, but smaller than most people guess.
• Fabrication and installation, about a third. Templating, cutting, edge polishing, the sink cutout and setting the tops is skilled work and it costs the same in a $40 slab as a $90 one. This is the part that separates a countertop from a piece of stone.
• Edges and cutouts. An eased edge is the least expensive profile. A mitred waterfall end or a full-height backsplash adds stone and labour; a second sink or a cooktop cutout adds a line each.
• Tear-out and delivery. Removing and disposing of the old laminate, driving the slabs out and setting up on site are fixed costs that do not shrink much on a small kitchen.

Why this stone was the right call

Calacatta Mont gave the owners the white-marble kitchen they wanted for the price of a mid-range quartz, and it will look the same in ten years: non-porous, no sealing, and the veining is light enough that the corner seam is nearly invisible. In a busier stone the same seam would have cut through a vein. On a 57 sq ft kitchen the whole job came out of a single 130″ × 65″ jumbo slab, seamed once at the corner, which is what kept the stone line where it is.
